Gabriel Garcia Marquez to be honored in Brussels

by Matthew Sterne September 23, 2014

The European Parliament and the Colombian Embassy will participate in an event dedicated to the life and work of late writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez, reported local media.

The celebration is a creation of the chat show “A bridge between Europe and Colombia letters,” moderated by Julio Sanchez, director of radio station La W. This station has officially covered the event. Panelists will be the brother of Garcia Marquez, Jaime Garcia Marquez; Nobel biographer, Gerard Martin, and the Colombian writer Juan Gabriel Vasquez.

The Colombian singer and songwriter, Fonseca, will play several vallenatos as part of the tribute. According to the official statement , this genre was the “most admired and sang by Gabriel Garcia Marquez in his lifetime, the songs inspired him to write several short stories and books. ”

Fonseca said, “I am happy and grateful to be part of a tribute to one of the most talented Colombians and a excellent representative of the culture of our country. Vallenato, a popular folk music of Colombia, became a part of Marquez’s personal and literary life. He always said that One Hundred Years of Solitude was a 400-page vallenato. What better tribute to his memory than to thank, with vallenato, this broad legacy left from Colombia to the world. ”

The Parliament will be decorated with yellow flowers, Wayuu backpacks, cannas and a huge portrait of Gabo on a container donated by the Port Authority of Cartagena.

According to Rodrigo Rivera, Colombia’s ambassador in Brussels, the tribute “seeks to evoke the importance of Gabo and his work, its impact on Europe, his life from a literary point of view and some of his most intimate experiences.”
