Final FARC hostage release to go ahead today

by Edward Fox February 16, 2011

Colombia news - pizarro

Government delegate, Eduardo Pizarro, has announced that the release of the final two hostages will take place Wednesday, Colombian media reports.

This comes after former Senator Piedad Cordoba stated that the coordinates have been provided and military operations in the designated area were ceased Tuesday at 9PM.

The only element that could stop the mission now is the weather. However, Pizarro has said that the weather is excellent for the liberation process and that the operation will go ahead.

Cordoba made the statement from Bogota, prior to her departure on Wednesday morning for Cali, the new base of operations.

Cordoba made her first public statement on Tuesday evening since Sunday’s failed hostage released. She maintained her commitment to all future release efforts but contradicted the government’s claim that the FARC were to blame for Sunday’s failure.

Furthermore, on Wednesday morning the FARC released their first statement since the incident, refuting the government’s claims while also stating they would hold an investigation into what really took place.

Salin Sanmiguel and Guillermo Solorzano are the final two hostages due to be released after last week saw four others, a marine, a policeman and two politicians, liberated.
