FARC members in Medellin target Antioquia senator

by Marguerite Cawley May 27, 2011

Colombia News - Liliana Rendon

A Colombian army commander has reported that Conservative Party Senator Liliana Rendon has become a target of FARC members operating in the city of Medellin, Antioquia department, local media reported Friday.

According to General Alberto Jose Mejia Ferrero, commander of the Army’s 4th Brigade, the Antioquian congresswoman, as well as those close to her, have been victims of various threats and are possibly being pursued by the guerrillas.

“We have information that a cell of the FARC’s 18th Front, that operates in the city of Medellin, was following and making verifications about the places that Ms. Liliana Rendon frequented, specifically about her residence, which was robbed by unknown people this past weekend,” said the general.

The FARC’s 18th Front is also involved in operations in the Ituango municipality, where the senator is from.

The commander said that authorities have reinforced security services for Rendon, particularly when she travels to other municipalities in the department.
