‘FARC explosives company leader’ killed

by Sarah Cast August 9, 2011

Colombia news - fusiles

An alleged leader of an explosives company in the leftist guerrilla organization FARC has been killed by the Colombian military in the department of Tolima, reported various media Monday.

Fidel Colorado, alias “El Renco,” one of the alleged ringleaders of the FARC explosives company “Alfredo Gonzalez,” was killed in the municipality of Planada, announced the Southern Tolima Task Force of the Army’s 9th Brigade.

The Alfredo Gonzalez company is known for making landmines to install along the routes of mobility forces of the Colombian military, particularly along the border of the Tolima and Huila departments, the commander of the Southern Tolima Task Force said according to Caracol Radio.

El Renco was reportedly responsible for planting landmines in the area and also said to have recruited minors for the FARC.

“Among the most outstanding criminal actions of this individual are the murder to a community leader from the village of Peña Rica and the killing of two soldiers from the Mobile Brigade No. 8,” an Army representative was quoted as saying by the newspaper El Tiempo.

The Army also seized five automatic rifles, a sub-machine gun and a laptop in the operation.
