A Colombia Army captain was murdered in the southwestern state of Caqueta in an apparent attack from members of the guerrilla group the FARC, Colombian media reported on Tuesday.
Captain Gustavo Enrique Ortiz was killed Monday afternoon while carrying out social work within the community, according to Colombia’s El Tiempo newspaper.
According to authorities, members of the FARC’s 15th front “hid in a house in the city center and from there shielded themselves” in order to carry out the killing.
The shooting of the 31-year-old officer in the town of La Union Peneya was deemed by the army as “a clear violation of all norms of international law.”
Last Wednesday Ortiz had led a day for support and development where over 600 people including farmers, merchants, and families were given special tools for agricultural work, and school kits for the children.
The army is offering a reward of $724,000 for information leading to the capture of the FARC’s 15th front commander, alias “Wilmer,” who is believed to be responsible behind the attack.
