Iconic Colombian composer Wilson Choperena dies

A renowned Colombian composer Wilson Choperena died Tuesday in a Bogota hospital at the age of 87.

Choperena wrote over 70 Bolero and Cumbia songs, includig the classic Cumbia number “La Pollera Colora.”

Cumbia is traditional Colombian music incorporating the clarinet. Bolero is a form of traditional music from Cuba.

The songwriter died following complications after spending nearly one month in hospital. He was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

He was born in the town of El Plato in the coastal department of Magdalena on 25 December 1923.
