Tennis star Alejandro Falla lost to Uzbeki Dennis Istomin Friday in Wimbledon’s third round, ending a historic run for the Colombian player.
Falla became the first Colombian to reach the third round of the iconic tournament after winning Thursday, but lost 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) to Istomin. The Uzbeki made history of his own becoming the first player from his country to reach Wimbledon’s fourth round.
The Colombian capped an impressive showing at the All England Club this year by winning two grueling five-set matches, one against 10th-ranked American, John Isner. He improved upon his 2011 results, when he lost in the second round.
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos took to Twitter Thursday to praise the 73rd-ranked Falla: “Congratulations to Alejandro Falla for his success that contributes to the good name of our country.”
