Ex-governor of Santander accused of paramilitary ties

by Natalie Dalton November 1, 2011

colombia news - hugo aguilar

A former governor of Santander was accused Tuesday of having paramilitary ties by a delegated prosecutor of the Supreme Court of Justice.

Hugo Eliodoro Aguilar Naranjo, who is both an ex-governor as well as the father of the current Santander governor, was accused alongside a former police colonel for alleged crimes of conspiracy with the now-defunct paramilitary organization AUC.

According to investigators, the former official had ties with the AUC’s Central Bolivar Bloc that was led by Carlos Mario Jimenez, alias “Macaco,” and Ivan Roberto Duque, alias “Ernesto Baez.”

Other ex-politicians and officials, including ex-Senator Luis Alberto Gil and former Congressman Juan Pablo Sanchez, have been charged for collaborating with the same bloc and as a result have been banned from holding public office and were sentenced to prison.
