‘Ex-FARC, Rastrojos boss’ captured

by Travis Mannon July 27, 2011

Colombia news - cascabel

Police arrested a man Wednesday suspected of being a former guerrilla and a current commander of the drug gang “Los Rastrojos,” various media reported.

Jose Uriel Zapata Almesiga, alias “Cascabel” (rattlesnake), was captured in Riofrio, a coastal municipality in the western department of Valle del Cauca.

He is being held on charges of aggravated conspiracy and illegal possession of military weapons.

The 28-year-old, an alleged former member of the FARC, deserted the guerrilla group in 2005 to become the commander of the counter-guerrilla division of the drug trafficking gang Los Rastrojos.

The alleged drug trafficker had a front as a coffee merchant.

Cascabel has previously spent 18 months in prison for murder. He is known to have participated in several attacks on citizens in the town of Barragon in Valle del Cauca when he was a member of the FARC.
