Ex-congressman sentenced for ‘parapolitics’

by Edward Fox March 10, 2011

Colombia news - gavel

Colombia’s Supreme Court has sentenced former Congressman Rafael Caballero to five years and seven months in prison for ties to the demobilized paramilitary group, the AUC, W Radio reports.

Caballero accepted a plea bargain in an ongoing investigation into his involvement with the former AUC leader, Hernan Giraldo, alias “El Patron,” who commanded the “Resistencia Tairona” bloc.

The Court also ordered that the former Liberal Party representative for the department of Magdalena pay a fine equivalent to 4,875 months minimum salary ($1.4 million).

Last month, the former Governor of Magdalena Jose Domingo Davila Armenta was sentenced to 90 months in jail and fined nearly $2 million for his ties to the same AUC bloc.
