Ecuador court orders arrest of Colombian police chief

by Toni Peters September 9, 2011

Colombia News - Oscar Naranjo

An Ecuadorean court has issued an arrest warrant for Colombia’s National Police director for the 2008 cross-border raid in which FARC commander Raul Reyes and 25 others were killed, reported Colombian media Friday.

The court of Sucumbios ordered the capture of General Oscar Naranjo on murder charges.

Arrest warrants were also issued for the former commanders of the Military Forces, the Army, the Navy and the Colombian Air Force, as well as Police Coronel Camilo Alvarez.

The six current and former military chiefs did not appear at a hearing Monday so the arrest warrant was issued to ensure their attendance. However the arrest warrant only covers Ecuadorean territory.

In late June, the Sucumbios Court of Justice pressed charges against the six for murder, but refrained from charging President Juan Manuel Santos, who was Defense Minister at the time, with the same crime.

The Ecuadorean government has distanced itself from the actions of the Sucujmbios court as it is trying to reestablish the ties with Colombia that were cut almost immediately after the raid.
