The Copa Postobon soccer tournament, on Wednesday, featured two classic inter-city showdowns with teams from Colombia’s two largest cities, Bogota and Medellin, battling for city bragging rights.
In the country’s capital Bogota, the Millionarios took on Santa Fe in what turned out to be a relatively slow match, resulting in a 1-1 tie. Most of the game was played at center field with very few scoring chances or shots on goal.
The final result kept the Millionarios in the lead of Group D with 7 points and Santa Fe at second with 5 points.
Both teams were playing without their full starting lineups because of payroll issues.
In Colombia’s primary soccer league, “Liga Postobon” Santa fe ranks at the top of the rankings with the Millionarios not far behind.
In the second classic of the night, Nacional destroyed Medellin Independiente with a high powered offensive attack that resulted in a 5-2 win.
Sherman Cardenas, Nacional’s attacking midfielder, scored the night’s first goal and last goal and led the team in goals scored. Nacional scored three goals between the 40th and 50th minute to put them up 4-1 in what had to of been a nightmare for Medellin fans.
Atanasio Giradot Stadium, the home field of both teams, was mostly decked out in green for Nacional who were ready to see their team win a game instead of draw like they have done their previous three games in Liga Postobon. They were certainly rewarded on Wednesday.
Nacional currently leads group B with seven points and Medellin sits in third place with four points.
