Disgraced Bogota mayor faces further sanctions

by Kathryn Thompson May 4, 2011

Colombia news - Samuel Moreno

Suspended Bogota Mayor Samuel Moreno was dealt another blow when his political party Polo Democratico suspended him for three months, W Radio reported Wednesday.

The ethics committee of the Polo Democratico party decided to suspend Moreno pending investigations into the mayor’s involvement in the growing public works corruption scandal.

“Samuel Moreno is obligated to abide by the principles of politics, ethics and morals enshrined in the party and his decisions affect our party,” read a statement from Polo Democratico.

On Tuesday, the Inspector General’s Office suspended Moreno from office for three months after uncovering apparent irregularities in the awarding of public works projects to the disgraced Nule Group construction firm, most notably, a 2009 TransMilenio construction contract that has yet to be initiated.
