Convicted ex-mayor arrested over illegal contracts

by Marguerite Cawley March 2, 2011

Colombia news - Arrests

Authorities arrest a former mayor of Soacha, a municipality near Bogota, who has been convicted of illegally making local government contracts, Colombian news media reported Tuesday.

Agents from the Technical Investigation Team (CTI) of the Prosecutor General’s Office arrested Soacha ex-Mayor Wilson Dario Cabra Cruz in southern Bogota.

The ex-mayor was sentenced in June to four years and one month in prison following decisions by the Third Penal Court of Soacha and a Cundinamarca tribunal, but until now, according to an article in newspaper Periodismo Publico, has been under house arrest.

The arrest of the ex-mayor pertained to irregularities found in two contracts Cabra Cruz made during his time in office between 1998 and 2000. The contracts were for the manufacture and installation of traffic signals in the Soacha barrio San Mateo, and together were worth around $30,000.
