Court to review Senator Cordoba’s dismissal

by Kathryn Thompson April 5, 2011

Colombia news - piedad cordoba

Colombia’s Constitutional Court will review the inspector general’s decision last year to remove Senator Piedad Cordoba from public office, Semana reported on Monday.

A petition filed by Cordoba against the actions of Inspector General Alejandro Ordoñez has been selected out of hundreds of others to be reviewed by the Constitutional Court.

This move by the Court is especially interesting in light of the Supreme Court’s rejection of an attempt by Cordoba to return to office in February this year. It is rare for Colombia’s two highest courts to not respect the decisions of one another.

Cordoba was barred from holding public office for 18 years in September 2010 due to alleged ties with guerrilla group the FARC.

Should the Constitutional Court rule in favor of Cordoba and grant her dismissal unfair, it could set a precedent for future actions by the inspector general.
