Conservatives gain ground in Antioquia governor election

by James Bargent September 5, 2011

The gubernatorial election in Antioquia looks set to be a tight two-way race between Green Party candidate Sergio Fajardo and Conservative Alvaro Vasquez, according to the latest opinion poll.

The poll, commissioned by the Association of Higher Education Institutions of Antioquia, showed former Medellin mayor Fajardo leading with 38.9% of the vote, closely followed by Vasquez on 35.5%.

The results suggest Vasquez is rapidly gaining ground on Fajardo; just last month Fajardo had a seemingly insurmountable lead, polling 56.9% to Vasquez’s 13.2% in a TeleAntioquia poll.

Partido de la U candidate Carlos Mario Estrada, who is backed by former president and governor of Antioquia Alvaro Uribe, is trailing on 9.6%.

According to the poll, 14.6% of people are yet to make up their minds, while 1.4% intended to register a blank vote.
