Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos has proposed a carbon tax to be paid by companies who pollute the environment, local media reported.
Santos proposed to include the carbon tax in the tax reform bill that will be presented to Congress in July.
“There are companies that deserve to pay taxes, because they are polluting too much,” Santos said in a meeting with leaders of the Green Party in Bogota on Tuesday, World Environment Day.
Santos explained that work has to be done to make the proposal feasible.
If the proposal is accepted, Colombia will be the first country in Latin America to have a carbon tax.
