Colombia’s most important mayor candidates

by James Bargent October 24, 2011

Colombia news - elect

With just days to go before Colombia’s local elections, campaigning has officially ended and security forces and electoral observers are moving into place. Colombia Reports looks at all the main candidates to be the next mayors of Colombia’s principal cities.

In the capital, Bogota, there is a three way split between those competing to replace disgraced suspended mayor Samuel Moreno.

In Colombia’s second city, Medellin, the race to be mayor remains too close to call, after a series of hard-hitting allegations of links to paramilitary groups and criminal gangs left neither of the favorites untainted.

In Cali, one candidate has emerged as a clear winner from the corruption scandal that threatened to derail the campaign and discredit the race.
