The Commander of Colombia’s Armed forces announced the launch of an investigation into the alleged existence of a drug smuggling network within the military, local media reported on Thursday.
“The investigation will be thorough in order to uncover and dismantle the entire network; it is completely unacceptable that we have these criminal elements within the institution,” said Commander General Alejandro Navas.
The Commander General’s statements come on the heels of reports that six Colombian soldiers were arrested on Tuesday for attempting to smuggle 121 pounds of marijuana onto a military plane.
Another member of the Armed Forces was also arrested on Tuesday with 174 pounds of marijuana in his possesion.
Navas made it clear that the army has “zero tolerance for any [sort of] criminal activity.”
