Colombian town repeats elections after ‘none of the above’ vote

by Jean Carrere November 15, 2011

Bello, Antioquia

The northwest Colombian town of Bello released a new list of mayoral candidates on Tuesday after the majority of voters chose “none of the above” in the election in October.

The candidates are Carlos Muños of the Conservative Party, German Rodriguez of the Indigenous Authorities of Colombia, Juan Sebastian Montaya of the Afrovides Movement, Alex Varela of the Movement for Inclusion and Opportunities, and Luz Imelda Ochoa, supported by the Liberal Party, the Green Party and the Alternative Democratic Pole.

The town’s elections will have to be held again after blank votes defeated the sole candidate, German Londoño of the Conservative Party on October 30.

The electorate did not miss the ties between Londoño and former mayor Oscar Suarez Mira, currently detained in a Bogota prison over alleged ties to paramilitary group AUC.
