Colombian tennis star Santiago Giraldo upset Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the opening round of the Swiss Open Gstaad 2011.
After losing the first set 5-7, unseeded Giraldo humiliated the sixth-seeded Guillermo in two successive sets, 6-2 and 6-1 respectively. The match lasted one hour and 38 minutes.
Guillermo was previously ranked 37th in world while Giraldo was ranked 61st, making the Colombian’s victory quite an impressive feat. This match was his 22nd victory in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season.
With this crushing victory, Giraldo moves on to the second round to face his next challenger, Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer, who was the runner-up in last year’s Vienna tournament.
The prize for first place in the tournament is $651,195 (€450,000).
