Colombian military claims killing 21 FARC and ELN rebels in combat

by Emil Foget September 8, 2014

The Colombian army said Monday it has killed 21 and captured six guerrillas of the country’s largest armed rebel group FARC and the smaller ELN in several operations in the southwest of the country.

The offensive was carried out in the southwestern Nariño, Valle del Cauca and Cauca states as a part of ongoing counterinsurgency efforts.

The FARC and ELN exercise strong control in the southwest of Colombia.

One of the operations took place on Saturday when soldiers from an infantry battalion fought an ELN unit in the north of Cauca. The combat resulted in the death of two rebels and the arrest of two others.

The military released no information on the remaining 19 rebels who were allegedly killed.

The Army additionally claimed to have seized three pistols, 57 cartridges of different calibers, one grenade, 2-way radios and one solar panel.

Information on the other combats and deaths are yet to be released.
