Colombian medic dies in Florida helicopter crash

by Toni Peters December 27, 2011

Florida crash

A doctor from Cali who worked in the U.S. for 15 years died in a helicopter crash in Florida while collecting a donor heart for transplant.

Luis Felipe Bonilla died Monday along with two others as the helicopter, after leaving University Hospital Shands in Gainesville headed to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, crashed in a wooded area.

The Mayo Clinic issued a statement saying “The Mayo is working internally to support the families and employees of those who have died in such a lamentable tragedy.”

The authorities took hours to locate the crash site and had to use all-terrain vehicle to access the area.
