Colombia ups protection for threatened governor

by Christan Leonard June 7, 2012

Colombia’s minister of the interior ordered increased protection for the governor of Antioquia, Sergio Fajardo, who received death threats earlier this week, Caracol Radio reported Thursday.

Interior Minister Federico Velez Renjifo ordered the National Protection Unit to increase protection measures for Fajardo after death threats forced officials to evacuate the governor’s office Wednesday.

The army and the National Police are in charge of Fajardo’s security detail. Nation Police Unit director Andres Villamizar said the government was very concerned about the governor’s safety and assured Fajardo security measures would be increased.
