Colombia has increased funding for educational exchange between the US and Colombia, said Fullbright Colombia Friday.
This funding increase followed U.S. President Barack Obama’s announcement last March of the “100,000 Strong in the Americas Initiative,” which aims to increase educational exchange between the U.S. and Latin America. However, the American economic and political situation has prevented any increase in funding from the US.
Instead, Bogota has stepped up where Washington has been unable to provide, executive director of Fulbright Colombia Ann Mason told Colombia Reports.
“We are very pleased to see that the Colombian government has increased its support for this very important program,” said Mason.
According to the Fullbright official, these ongoing exchanges are very important to strengthening knowledge communites both in the U.S. and Latin America.
In 2012 the United States will welcome 100 Colombian Fulbright Fellows and Colombia will host 50 American Fulbright recipients.
