Colombia’s finance minister Juan Carlos Echeverry has announced a $3.1 million budget for the implementation of the Victims and Land Restitution Law in 2012.

He said $1.2 million would be spent on health and education, especially for children who are victims of violence, while the rest would be spent compensating victims of displacement.

The $3.1 million represents 1% of GDP and is already incorporated into next year’s total government budget, and the overall fiscal framework for the next 10 years.

Another $3.7 million has been assigned to increase the number of Colombian soldiers and police officers, and improve welfare programs in the military.
