Colombian tennis player Alejandro Falla lost in the first round of Wimbledon Tuesday.
Falla was unable to repeat his famous heroic efforts in the first round of last year’s tournament, when he took Roger Federer to five sets, as he succumbed to 11th-seeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer, 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 6-2.
The Colombian, who had been given a wild card entry to the tournament after his impressive run at the recent French Open, won the first set and lost a tight second set tie-break before Melzer began to reflect his ranking and ran out a fairly comfortable winner in the final two sets.
After Giraldo’s exit at the hands of Frenchman Richard Gasquet Monday, there are now no more Colombians left in the main men’s draw.
Colombian Juan Sebastian Cabal, who made history in reaching the French Open men’s doubles final in May, faces a tough first match in the men’s doubles against the fourth seeds. He is paired with fellow Colombian Robert Farah.
