Colombian ladies win first Fed Cup matches

Colombia claimed victory against Venezuela in their first match-up of the 2012 Fed Cup Monday.

The Americas Group One matches saw Catalina Castaño beat Gabrielle Paz [7-6, 7-5], while Mariana Duque claimed victory against Andrea Gamiz [6-2, 6-2].

The Colombians also claimed doubles victory over their Venezuelan opponents [6-7, 6-0, 6-0], giving them a 3-0 result overall.

The other match-up in Pool B, which is being held in Curitibia, Brazil, saw Paraguay come out 3-0 victors against Bolivia.

Colombia [20th], are the highest ranked of the five teams competing in Pool B. Tuesday they face Bolivia [56th], the lowest ranked of the teams. Brazil [28th] will open their account against Paraguay [22nd], while Venezula [50th] have a rest day. Colombia face Paraguay Wednesday and Brazil Friday.

The winner of Pool B will face the winner of Pool A, comprised of Canada, Chile, Peru and the Bahamas, on Saturday 4 February.

Only the victor of that match-up will advance to World Group Two, in April, and have the chance to win the competition overall.
