Colombia soccer league week 5 review

Week five of Colombian Postobon Soccer came to a close on Sunday night with Cucuta Deportivo defeating Junior de Barranquilla to place them in a first place tie, while Deportivo Pasto suffered their first loss in a shocking blowout, and Independiente Medellin lost again.

Cucuta came away with a 2-0 victory over Junior after goals were scored by Argentine midfielder, RodrigoSoria, and forward John Steven Mendoza. Junior has struggled this season and has achieved victory only in week one. Cucuta now has a 3-2-0 (wins-ties-losses) record, and is tied for first place with an IndependienteSanta Fe team that sits at 3-2-1.

Previous number one, Deportivo Pasto, was crushed 3-0 by Deportes Tolima, who were coming off an upset loss on Wednesday in the Copa Libertadores. All three Tolima goals were scored within a twenty-six minute span of time, beginning with a successful penalty kick. Pasto has remained tied for second with a 3-1-1 record while Tolima improves to 2-2-1.

Independiente Medellin has failed to earn a second victory, losing at home (0-1) to Envigado after falling behind by a goal in the early minutes of the game. Medellin had the ten man advantage for much of the game after midfielder Faider Fabio Burbano was shown the red card at the 62 minute mark for his second bookable offense. Medellin compiled eight shots on goal to one by Envigado who earned their second win.

Deportivo Cali was held scoreless against Atletico Huila, losing 0-1 in the week’s Friday opener to fall to 2-2-1. Meanwhile, the game between Medellin’s Atletico Nacional (2-3-0) and winless Deportes Quindio ended in a scoreless draw in Armenia, while Bogota’s Millionarios rebounded with a 2-1 victory over a weaker Chico team.
