Independiente Medellin and Deportivo Pasto both won their vital soccer matches to secure the final two qualification places for the last eight stage of Colombia’s Liga Postobon.
Independiente, who seemed to have very little chance of making the next stage of the competition two weeks ago, beat Deportes Quindio 3-1 thanks to a brace from German Cano and a Felipe Pardo strike.
The result means that Medellin complete a remarkable turnaround from a few weeks ago when they were stranded outside the top eight, while for Quindio their quest for qualification ends in failure.
The other team to progress was Pasto who beat Cucuta Deportivo 2-1 to leapfrog their opponents in the table and claim the last qualification spot by a point.
Cucuta had taken the lead in this one through Mateo Figoli, however the hosts hit back soon after through a Victor Zapata strike before Omar Andres Rodriguez completed the turnaround before half time.
The other teams to be left disappointed were Boyaca Chico, who lost 1-0 at Santa Fe and Deportivo Cali who could only manage a 1-1 draw with La Equidad on Saturday.
At the top Millionarios ensured that they finished in number one position in the league with a 2-0 win over Patriotas Boyaca. There were victories for high-flying Junior, Atletico Nacional and Itagui.
What this all means is that next weekend will begin the next group stage of the Liga Postabon with the eight teams who gained the most points taking part.
Group A is set to be contested by Millionaires, Junior, Deportes Tolima and Deportivo Pasto, while Group B contains La Equidad, Itagui, Nacional and Medellín.
