Colombia signs partnership with Purdue University

by Daniel E Freeman January 21, 2014

Colombia’s “Colciencias” administrative science department signed an agreement Monday with the United States’ Purdue University to provide access to undergraduate and graduate programs to Colombian students.

The Colombian government will help finance students who wish to pursue degrees at the renowned Indiana-based university through the executive branch’s Colciencias program.

“We have signed a memorandum of agreement between Purdue University and Colciencias in order to finance…high levels of study, a doctorate level…all for those young Colombians who wish to attend Purdue University,” announced the Colombian Minister of Education, Maria Fernanda Campo.

Purdue, located in the northwest of Indiana, has partnered with the Colombian government before in boosting scientific research. Monday’s deal will pave the way for Colombian students to obtain scholarships through the government to pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees.

“This is an important strategy for Colombia, for our productive sector, for our universities, to be able to create a very strong relationship that allows us to advance together in goals for our country,” said the Education Minister.

The afternoon agreement concluded with President Juan Manuel Santos, Minister Campo, General Director of Colciencias Paula Arias, and Purdue University President Mitchell Daniels Jr. taking a tour of the Casa de Nariño, Colombia’s presidential palace.
