Colombia appeals extradition denial of Chile ‘FARC financier’

by Hannah Aronowitz January 25, 2011

Colombia news - Manuel Olate

Colombian prosecutors have appealed the Chile’s Supreme Court’s decision to deny their extradition request for a Chilean suspected of financing Colombia’s largest guerrilla group, FARC, reported newspaper La Semana Tuesday.

The emergence of new evidence linking Chilean communist Manuel Olate with FARC rebels has given Colombian prosecutors reason to request the annulment of the Chilean court’s decision.

The new evidence includes photos of Olate with FARC leader Ivan Marquez and according to weekly Semana, videos which show Olate visiting Venezuela, where Marquez is known to operate.

If the Chilean court accepts the appeal, Olate, whose initial extradition request was denied on January 15, will be tried again for extradition with the new evidence.
