Colombia invited the Spanish government to participate in a campaign against landmines, Univision reported Thursday.
The Colombian Embassy in Spain joined a campaign entitled “Lend Your Leg” which works to educate society about the damaging effects of landmines.
“We are inviting Colombians living in Spain and Spanish society to say ‘No’ to anti-personnel mines! It’s a worldwide issue which leaves at least 200 victims a year in Colombia and more than 4,000 worldwide,” said Orlando Sardi de Lima, the Colombian Ambassador to Spain.
The “Lend Your Leg” initiative is part of a larger campaign surrounding the International Day for Mine Awareness which takes place on April 4.
Landmines have been a devastating part of Colombia’s on-going conflict for more than two decades. Colombia has the second highest number of new land mine victims per year after Afghanistan.
