Colombia downplays Venezuelan tribute to ‘Alfonso Cano’

by Tim Hinchliffe December 12, 2011

Colombia’s vice president announced on Sunday that a tribute to the former leader of the FARC, “Alfonso Cano,” which took place in Caracas, was not the fault of the Venezuelan government.

“We know that this tribute was not engaged by the Venezuelan government and was carried out by a few people who are wrong,” said VP Angelino Garzon.

The vice president ensured that the tribute would not affect relations between Colombia and Venezuela as both countries have already agreed to work together in combating illegal groups like the FARC.

The controversial tribute took place Saturday afternoon in the Venezuelan capital and included wreaths, live music and photos of the fallen guerrilla leader.
