A Colombian congressman who is accused for abusing his ex-wife and failing his parenting duties on Thursday rejected the allegations by claiming “to be the victim.”
In a interview with newspaper El Tiempo, Jose Rodolfo Perez defended himself for the first time since the news about alleged abuse sparkled a debate about family violence in Colombia.
“I have never touched [ex-wife] Zully Mejia. I am surprised by the statements she has made in the media,” Perez told El Tiempo.
The congressman further told the newspaper that his innocence could be proven. He said that the building where the alleged attack found place keeps a record of all activities.
Regarding this scandal’s impact on his political career the lawmaker said “people know what kind of person Zully Mejia is,” adding that other women were willing to testify on his behalf.
“I am the victim here,” he concluded.
