Rebels from the guerrilla group FARC have allegedly been injured and one killed on Monday as a result of a recently intensified police offensive in Colombia’s southern department of Caqueta.

Police have strengthened their offensive against FARC strongholds in 16 municipalities within the department of Caqueta, a region with a strong FARC prevalence. The operation allegedly led to an armed confrontation between police and guerrilla members.

According to newspaper El Espectador, the police intervention prevented a terrorist attack on a police building in Caqueta.

Police Commander Colonel Carlos Vargas has claimed that the FARC guerrilla that was killed in combat “was carrying arms and ammunition.” He also stated that several other guerrillas were wounded during the police operation.

Police have also allegedly located a clandestine FARC stronghold in Meta, one of the more central departments, reported El Espectador.
