Child seriously injured by explosive in western Colombia

by Tom Heyden May 23, 2011

Colombia News - A 13 year explisive

A 13-year-old boy is in a serious condition after an explosive went off in the western Colombian department of Choco, Caracol Radio reported Sunday.

Four children apparently came across the explosive device, believed to be a fragmentation grenade, while playing on the beach in Nuqui, near the department’s capital, Quibdo.

One of the children took it home at night, where it subsequently exploded. The child was taken to hospital with injuries to his legs and abdomen.

The local ombudsman stated that investigations were underway to determine the source of the explosive, with the suggestion that it may have been left there after military exercises had been in operation in the preceeding hours.
