Caterine Ibarguen is El Espectador’s Sportsperson of 2011

Caterine Ibarguen

Colombian athlete Catherine Ibarguen Mena was chosen as Sportsperson of the Year by newspaper El Espectador.

She was chosen for her sporting achievements, with a bronze medal in the long jump (6.63 meters) and a gold medal in the triple jump (14.92 meters) in the Panamerican Games in Guadelajara, Mexico.

Swimmer Omar Pinzon was runner-up in the awards with BMX rider Mariana Pajon taking third place.

The Colombian team in the Panamerican Games, which took place in the final two weeks of October, was chosen as Team of the Year.

Julio Roberto Gomez, director of Indeportes Antioquia, was awarded the title Director of the Year.

The prize for Best Trainer went to Jaime Cuervo, manager of the Colombian Futsal team. Futsal is five-aside indoor soccer. Cuervo led the team to win the AMF Futsal World Cup in March 2011.
