Bus crash leaves 7 dead, 35 injured

by Hannah Aronowitz January 14, 2011

Colombia news - san luis

Seven passengers died and 35 were injured when a bus traveling from Bogota to Medellin crashed into a ravine Friday Morning, reported newspaper El Tiempo.

Most of the injured “arrived with multiple fractures and injuries to the face and neck, some serious,” Carlos Alberto Lemos, the manager of the San Rafael hospital in San Luis, told the newspaper. He also noted that fortunately none of the four children on the bus were seriously injured.

Most of the wounded are being treated at the San Rafael hospital, five have been transferred to the Rio Negro hospital, and four more might be transferred there.

“Apparently the bus blew a tire,” said a representative of the Antioquia police.

The crash occurred at about 6:30 am Friday at kilometer marker 77 near San Luis on the Medellin-Bogota highway, which stopped traffic at that point.
