World-famous bullfighters to perform in Bogota

by Tom Heyden January 12, 2011

Colombia new - bull fight

Bullfighting enthusiasts in Bogota will have added reason to celebrate this year as 2011 signals the 80th anniversary of the iconic “Plaza de Toros de Santamaria.” Opening on January 15 and running until February 20 Bogota’s bullfighting season will welcome Spain’s Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza, considered the best bullfighter in the world.

The Spaniard, for whom this will be his first event in the whole of South America, will be on show between January 23 and 30 along with his complete stable of Spanish horses.

Hermoso de Mendoza will not be the only famous face, however, as he will be joined by other well-known bullfighters such as Julian Lopez Escobar, alias”El Juli,” Sebastian Castella, and Miguel Abellan. Spain’s Diego Urdiales and Daniel Luque will also perform at Santamaria.

The construction of the “Plaza de Toros de Santamaria” began in 1927, and took four years to complete, before playing host to the world’s greatest bullfighters over the last 80 years.

The entertainment will start at 3:30 pm everyday, with prices ranging from $32.00 (COP60,000) to $196.00 (COP365,000).
