Breakdance marathon comes to Colombia

by Steven Cohen July 31, 2013

Colombia is preparing to play host to the biggest breakdancing competition in Latin America.

The Red Bull BC One Latin American Regional Final will be held in Bogota‘s Palace of Sports on Sunday, August 4, from 6-8PM. The event, which will be streamed live on Redbull.com, is free to the public and will be preceded by the Red Bull BC One Cypher Colombia on Saturday.

The format goes like this:

  • On Saturday, professional b-boys from across Colombia will compete in 1-on-1 battles in front of Red Bull judges to determine Colombia’s representatives to the regional tournament.
  • Then, on Sunday, winners from countrywide cyphers throughout Latin America will be pitted against one another to see who will go on to the world finals.
  • Regional finalists from the Latin America, North America, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Asia and Eastern and Western Europe brackets meet in Seoul, South Korea on November 30th in the 10th annual Red Bull BC One Finals, where they will go up against the previous eight winners in a best-of-16 battle to determine the overall champion.

The participants in Colombia’s national cypher have been chosen by a touring team of professional b-boys in conjunction with local “scene heads”, and 12 of the 16 participants in the Latin American Regional have already been vetted out through their own countries’ competitions. Currently, the Colombia Cypher is not taking any new participants, but the event is open and free of charge to the first 2,500 spectators to show up. The Regional Finals will also run a first come, first serve ticketless entry policy, and both can be streamed for free on Red Bull’s official website.
