Bogota mayor Gustavo Petro announced plans to improve the capital city’s Transmilenio mass transit system, local media reported Tuesday.
The new measures included the addition of 40 new buses by April 9, part of a larger fleet of 133 buses to be introduced before the end of May.
The announcement came in response to violent protests against poor transport services which virtually shut the city down earlier this month.
The routes of the new buses are strategically planned to tackle inefficiency and overcrowding in the system.
The mayor also authorized the rental of 100 extra feeder buses to ease public access to transit system stations.
It is expected the mayor will announce further measures in the coming days.
