Authorities seize 7 tons of ‘FARC’ explosives

by Edward Fox April 6, 2011

Colombia news - explosive

Authorities in the northeastern department of Arauca have seized seven tons of explosives thought to belong to the FARC, La.FM reported Wednesday.

Commander of the Aracua police department Colonel William Guevara, told media that after several weeks of operations, the police were able to detain the seven tons of ammonal which could have been used to construct at least 20 car bombs and 2,500 anti-personnel mines.

Ammonal is a highly explosive base made up of ammonium nitrate, aluminium powder and trinitrotoulene (TNT).

This is the second finding of FARC explosives within 10 days after security forces in the southwest of the country last week discovered over 100 pounds of ANFO explosive thought to belong to the guerrilla group’s 48th Front.
