by Mary Cecelia Bittner April 27, 2012

'FARC' attack in southern Colombia

Alleged FARC attacks in the southern departments of Caqueta and Cauca Thursday and Friday killed eight people, including a mother and her young son, reported local media.

The woman and infant died in rural area of Puerto Rico, Caqueta Department, early Friday morning after a pipe bomb exploded in the house where they were sleeping.

A total of five pipe bombs were detonated in the area during the attack, which also left the victim’s husband severly injured.

Another of the explosives destroyed the town’s health clinic. The other three bombs caused only minor damage to windows and buildings.

In Cauca department, an officer and four soldiers were killed in a battle with FARC guerrillas, reported Apollo Task Force commander General Jorge Humberto Jerez.

The official told media that fighting began on Thursday at 11:30PM and lasted until 5AM on Friday morning, and that the assailants “took their [fallen soldier’s] bodies.”

The military and police have accused the FARC’s Teofilo Forero Mobile Column front of the attack.
