Colombia and Guatemala on Wednesday signed an agreement to combat drug trafficking, with emphasis on utilizing the country’s respective navies.
Colombia’s Defense Minister, Juan Carlos Pinzon and Guatemala’s Defense Minister, Manuel Lopez Ambrosio signed an agreement to share information, have joint training, and have similar operation protocols between both countries’ navies as part of Pinzon’s tour of Central America.
“This will allow the Colombian navy and the Guatemalan navy to interact…in order to combat transnational crime,” said Pinzon.
The signed agreement will also allow for the transfer of information in the prosecution of drug traffickers.
Pinzon also reaffirmed his support for an agreement reached between both governments in 2012 that allowed Guatemalan police and military to work cooperatively with Bogota police officials. Next year Pinzon hopes to have Guatemalan police and military to receive additional training in Colombian training schools according to news outlet CM&.
Pinzon will travel to Jamaica and the Dominican Republic next.
