When officials from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) get together in Monaco next month to vote for the world’s top female athlete, one of the ten names up for consideration will be Colombia’s Caterine Ibarguen.
On Monday, the IAAF released its candidates lists for male and female World Athlete of the Year honors, with Caterine Ibarguen as Colombia’s, and Latin America’s, sole representative in the running for the award.
Ibarguen has had a standout year in international track, taking home, among a great many other trophies and top finishes, World Games gold, Panamerican gold, Olympic silver and 13 total medals from the South American Games.
The Antioquia native has already been dubbed the Colombian Female Athlete of the Year, and will now be held up against nine other of the best international competitors by a voting committee made up of the various athletic associations to determine the world’s best female athlete.

As it stands, Ibarguen will already be receiving a paid trip to Monaco in November, where she will be honored along with the other candidates at an IAAF gala.
Competing in the long, high and triple jumps, Caterine Ibarguen is one of the winningest athletes in Colombian history, only just beginning to hit her peak, setting 2013’s world record in the long jump, and having an all-time world record discounted due to wind speeds slightly over the accepted limits.
