Two people have died and many more were injured on Sunday while running with the bulls during a northern Colombian festival.
The festival took place over the weekend in the municipality of Arjona, Bolivar near Colombia’s coastal city of Cartagena.
Local officials reported that two people died from wounds they received while in the ring with the bulls. One man reportedly died after being gored in the heart.
There are conflicting reports on the total number of injuries suffered at the festival. Some report as many as 44 people were injured.
Taurine festivals are very common in northern Colombia and their histories date back to Spanish colonial times. Animal rights activists have encouraged Colombia’s government to make festivals like these illegal, however, bull fights, bull runs and cockfights remain legal in the country.
