Colombian soccer forward, Olmes Garcia, on Thursday signed a five-year contract with MLS side Real Salt Lake (RSL).
Garcia’s former Colombian team, Deportes Quindio, was reportedly paid by RSL for the transfer of the 20-year-old Barranquilla native.
During his two-year stint with Deportes Quindio, Garcia made 47 appearances scoring seven goals in 36 starts. The forward’s departure might have a negative effect on the rest of Quindio’s season, although there is not much room to drop as the team currently sits in second to last place in the Liga Postobon.
RSL General Manager Garth Lagerwey said the Colombian “is a talented player who is a significant part of our long-term plan … He’s fast, has a good size and is skilled, but he’ll need some time to get used to our system and to Utah. We’ll be patient with him as we help him adjust to a new country, a new team, a new language, a new culture and new tactics.”
Garcia made his MLS debut in a pre-season tournament on Wednesday with a 3 – 2 win over New England Revolution. The Colombian played 25 minutes.
