In a recent meeting with Colombian business leaders, a lead government representative expressed that peace talks currently being held to end the country’s over 48-year-long internal conflict have a real chance at bringing peace, local media reported.
Humberto de la Calle, a top government negotiator, also reportedly noted that the dialogue between the Colombian government and the FARC, Colombia’s largest left-wing rebel group, is not an excuse to validate terrorism on the guerrilla’s behalf.
“I would say that in my opinion, the opinion I have formed being there at that table, is that there is a real opportunity to end the armed conflict in Colombia through dialogue,” noted de la Calle when asked by business leaders about the progress made through the peace talks.
Discussions between the FARC and the Colombian government officially began in late 2012 with the intention of bringing about a peaceful end the the armed conflict that has gripped Colombia for decades.
