Colombia on Sunday secured a place in the 2013 under-20’s World Cup after defeating Peru 1-0.
The only goal of the match came in the form of a penalty shot from Juan Quintero in the 17th minute. It proved to be enough, however, for Colombia to hold onto its first place spot in the CONMEBOL South American qualifying division. The Colombia squad has nine points with two games left.
The 2013 U-20 World Cup will be held in Turkey. Colombia’s strong team is looking to become champions for the first time in the 36-year history of the competition.
Colombia hosted the under-20 games in 2011, but the host team failed to get past the quarterfinals, losing 3-1 to Mexico.
The Colombian national team, not the under-20 squad, appears to be in good form as well. The national team, anchored by star striker Radamel Falcao, is currently in third place out of nine South American teams hoping to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
